While in the throws of procrastination, I stumbled across an interesting man today. Jerry Coyne. Although his Wikipedia page contains lots of curious references to wade throgh, I recommend first checking out his blog, Why Evolution is True. Coyne posted six blog posts - just today! I can’t say I will be able to reach his hourly broadcast rate, but they say a person can be measured by when they first start their daily routine (Coyne’s first post today is at 6:30am). Personally, I am not sure what I make of his blog yet. From a handful of posts, it seems Coyne is integrated with current events and gathers for his readers a broad sample of perspectives on the events during a day.
An interview with jerry Coyne can be found here, where Coyne talks about the five books on evolution he believes are best. At the top, of course, is Darwin’s On The Origin of Species. Now that I have recently finished Daniel Dennett’s Darwin’s Dangerous Idea: Evolution and the Meaning of Life, I plan to read a couple more expositions on evolution and natural selection, and then compose a few pages on my thoughts on the works. Despite evolution being such a customary term in our daily lives - I ‘use’ it in my computer algorithms frequently - there is a sense that it is still not understood by many. So far I stand in Daniel Dennett’s field of universal-acid Darwinism: the random algorithm of natural selection is correct and explains all phenomenon, from the development of the eye to the anti-gradualist punctuated equilibrium speciation, to even our politics and social structure. How prepossessing and dangerous.
That concludes today’s journal. Lookout for more journals this week as I have some exciting material planned. Keep well near the edge-of-chaos, friends!
