The Adventure of a Valiant Spaceworm

This was a one-and-a-half year project to build a puzzle game that really could only work in virtual reality. We focused on hands, and what this provided the player, and found that drawing and physical manipulation are both very intuitive in virtual reality.

The Adventure of a Valiant Spaceworm is an (incomplete) game that takes these two concepts and puts them together. Players draw ‘spaceworms’ in the air, which then get turned into real, physical objects in the game. In a Portal-esque manner, the player uses these spaceworms to solve different series of puzzles, each teaching them how to manipulate the drawings in a different way. Throughout this, the intent was for the spaceworm to narrate the player’s progression.

My brother an I presented this game at WN Conference ‘21 in Seattle and had very positive reception. The project lost momentum, though, after we started exploring other ideas. Additionally, development for VR was very clunky and it made it hard to enjoy building the game. The grand vision was cool, but the execution took too much time when we were busy with work and school.
